The “Passport pat down”
There’s a very specific moment before every airport journey that says everything we need to know.
We call it the “passport pat down”.
It’s that universal pre-travel ritual, right before the taxi arrives, right before the airport taxi pulls off. The bags are already by the door. Travel documents are checked… then checked again. Someone’s doing that final pocket sweep: passport, phone, wallet. The classic double-tap of reassurance that nothing important has been left behind.
In homes, offices and hotel lobbies across Derby, it looks slightly different, but it always feels the same. Early morning light in the kitchen, someone still half-asleep but running through the mental checklist. A suitcase being dragged one last time to make sure it actually rolls properly. Travel pillows already around necks or stuffed into hand luggage. And usually, a quiet thought about what comes next, whether that’s a full English, a coffee at the airport or for some… Airport beers!
